Inexpensive sheer curtain panels can be a great first step for dressing up a window, but they're often plain and don't offer much privacy. An opaque fabric panel attached behind a sheer provides shade and privacy for just a few dollars.
Prepare the Fabric. Once we had chosen some light-blocking fabric, we cut it to size. The width of each fabric panel is the same as the sheer. The length of the panel should be the same as the distance from the seam below where the curtain rod goes to the bottom edge of the sheer.
We didn't want to hem all four edges of every fabric panel, so we just used a product called Fray Block to seal them (Inset Photo). Once the fabric panels were ready, we attached one to each sheer with a single stitched line.
The newly customized curtains gave us some quick-switch style options. We can sweep one or both curtain layers back with a pullback, or let both layers hang down.
