We used a charming old door and doorknobs to create a coat rack and message center. The project is easy to recreate with your own salvaged finds.
Prepare the Parts. Once you’ve found a door for your project, clean it up with soap and water. We decided not to repaint ours since it had a fun rustic finish. We also gathered a collection of antique doorknobs to use as hangers.
The door had two panels, and we decided to turn one of them into a cork board. We attached pieces of cork board inside the door’s panel with spray adhesive.
Next, we turned the door’s other panel into a chalkboard. We just masked off the panel with painter’s tape, and then rolled on two coats of chalkboard paint.
We had some fun with the door theme by using doorknobs as coat hangers. To attach the knobs, we drilled holes and mounted them on carriage bolts. Some knobs wouldn’t fit on the threads of the bolts, so we just secured them with epoxy.
That just left hanging the rack on the wall. We used a pair of two-part picture hangers, and then added a screw near the lower edge of the door for extra security.
