Truly personalized lighting can be yours, and it’s easier than you might think. We discovered that serving bowls are perfect for creating pendant light shades like the ones shown here.
Pendant Materials. In addition to a bowl, you’ll need a pendant light kit from the home center. You’ll also need a drill equipped with a hole saw.
Once you’ve selected a bowl, turn it upside down and mark two intersecting lines. Then drill a hole through the center point of those lines (inset photo). This starter hole will make it easier to drill the larger hole that accommodates the pendant kit.
Now use a hole saw to finish the hole. Apply moderate pressure as you drill, and take breaks to clear debris if the saw binds.
Add the Light. Pendant light kits include a cover plate that attaches to the ceiling, an adjustable-length cord, and a socket assembly with a ring that secures the shade. It’s easy to add your custom shade to this assembly.
After you attach the bowl shade to the pendant light kit, you’re ready to hang it. The metal bowls that we chose gave this dining area a fresh, charming style.
