This bath mat has a high-end look, but it’s actually inexpensive — and easy — to make yourself.
Simple Supplies. The mat consists of 16"-long slats and 22"-long cleats that are made of ¼"-thick craft wood. Each slat gets covered by a thin layer of cork material.
Use a sharp utility knife to cut the cork. You can use the wood slats as guides, and simply cut out the cork around them. You’ll notice that the slats are two widths: 1½" and 2½".
Spray adhesive forms a strong bond between the wood slats and the cork. After applying it to both surfaces, press the cork firmly in place on each slat. Then let it dry.
Lay the slats upside down, and use a framing square and wood scraps to line them up properly. Then apply the cleats to the undersides of the slats with construction adhesive. Coat the mat with polyurethane, then stick a few self-adhesive gripper pads to the bottom to prevent slips.
In addition to giving the mat a nice look, the cork is comfortable to stand on, too. The finished piece will add a lot of style to your bath.
