Rain chains are a stylish alternative to downspouts. When water empties out of the gutter, it clings to the chain until it reaches the ground. A catch basin lets it gently spill over to prevent erosion.
Easy Installation. Before you install your chain, you’ll need to add an extra gutter screw to support it. In the most basic chain setup, you simply hang the chain from a rod that lays over the opening in the gutter. It’s a good idea to install a reducer to create better flow.
To set up the catch basin, you'll need to position it so the chain will hang straight. Place stones under the basin, and then cut the sod using a spade.
After removing the sod, cover the bare spot with plastic sheeting and gravel. Then arrange the stones on top of the gravel.
Place the basin on the stones, and tip it slightly away from the house. Cut the chain to length, and attach it to the ring on the basin.
Now all that's left is to enjoy your outdoor addition. The pleasing sight and sound of water cascading into the basin at the bottom may actually make you look forward to the next rainy day.
