There’s something incredibly rich and inviting about a room that features multiple patterned pieces. It may seem intimidating to combine patterns, but it’s easy if you use a few key tips.
Plan for Patterns. We’ll explain how we pulled this inviting living room together with pattern. You can use these ideas to get a “layered” look in your own space!
Your first step is to choose a large, dramatic patterned piece for your room. In the living room shown here, we picked a big area rug to serve as the main patterned element.
Now you’re ready to shop for secondary patterns. These patterns should each have something in common with the main pattern. For example, the pillows we chose have colors in common with the room's area rug.
As you add more patterns to your space, consider their sizes. If all of a room’s furniture and decor have patterns that are similar in scale, then the patterned pieces won’t stand out as individual elements. Instead, choose a mix of pieces that feature patterns in varying sizes.
Don’t overlook the pattern that wall decor and accents can bring to your space. We added a large canvas over the couch to give the room even more interest. We also set a stained glass window against a mirror to introduce some pattern to the stairs.
