You don’t need a wall to separate two open areas. Just add window shades to an open bookshelf to create visual definition between the spaces.
Simple Shades. Inexpensive “temporary” shades, like the ones we used here, make it easy to close off a few columns of shelves. When applied to a shelf unit, they provide privacy and semi-enclosed storage in this room.
To get started, measure the width of the shelf. Then use a pencil to mark the appropriate length on the temporary window shade. Cut the shade using a utility knife and a straightedge.
Remove the backer strip to expose the adhesive on the window shade. Be sure that the fold of the paper is facing out.
Secure the shade by first pressing it gently into place. Then rub the shade with your thumb to fully adhere it to the shelf.
This bookcase serves the simple purpose of dividing up an open space into two distinct areas. But it also creates an opportunity for storage and display space that, when arranged attractively, can contribute a lot of style to the room.
