What is MDF?

Medium-density fiberboard (MDF) is a composite wood product that’s sold in panels. It’s engineered by bonding fine wood fibers together with adhesives, pressure, and heat.

The Basics of MDF Building. DIY projects are often built with MDF because it’s easy to work with and relatively inexpensive. The stiff, flat, and uniform material – free of grain and knots – cuts and drills nicely. Plus, it has a smooth surface that can be painted or stained (left). Although some safety precautions must be taken when working with MDF (to avoid exposure to formaldehyde and dust), it’s a building material that’s worth checking out.
