Don’t forget the outdoor activities when you’re planning your next gathering. With some spray paint and painter’s tape, you can convert an old plastic table into an oversized outdoor checkers board.
Fantastic Plastic. When you’re picking up the materials for this project, be sure to select spray paint that is intended for use on plastic. This type of paint is simple to use, holds up to the elements well, and is available at most home centers.
The first step is to clean the table thoroughly so the spray paint will stick. Then apply the base paint color to your table. For even coverage and to ensure a smooth surface, spray several thin coats.
Keeping in mind that a checkerboard is eight squares across, figure out the size that works for your table. After the base paint color dries overnight, apply painter’s tape to the entire area reserved for the checkerboard.
Cut a template from hardboard or heavy cardboard that’s the width of one row. Use this template to trace the checkerboard grid. Then cut out alternating squares with a utility knife, and peel the tape from those squares (inset).
Lay tape around the perimeter of the checkerboard to create a ¼”-wide border. You’ll also want to cover the exposed parts of the tabletop with paper to keep them from being painted. Then apply the second paint color to create the checkerboard’s squares and border.
To make the game pieces, cut ½”-thick slices of a tree branch and apply dark stain to half of them. The new game table is sure to provide hours of outdoor entertainment for your family and guests.
