Square, Straight Cuts with a Circular Saw

A circular saw is one of the handiest tools you can own when you need to cut project parts to size. But to get straight, square cuts, you’ll need to use a few tricks.

Build Your Skills. To cut along a marked line, create a simple guide for your saw. Just secure a straight board beside the layout line so that when the foot of the saw runs against it, the blade cuts right on the line (left). When you need to cut dimensional lumber to length, guide your saw with a short straightedge such as a speed square (below).
