Easy-to-use window film is a great option for adding some privacy to a room without sacrificing natural light. It’s also the perfect way to bring style and personality to your window.
Cut It Out. Customize basic window film by cutting out shapes to create an etched-glass look for windows and decorative objects. We’ll show you how to use window film, an application kit, and some contact paper patterns to get your desired effect.
Draw or trace the cutout patterns of your choice onto a piece of contact paper. Cut out the shapes, and then stick the contact paper pieces directly to the window.
Now that you have your pattern in place, measure your window and cut a piece of film that is at least 1” larger than the window on all sides. Spray window film application solution on both the window and the film. Remove the film’s protective liner, and then spray the adhesive side of the window film, too.
With the adhesive side facing the window surface, position the piece of window film on the pane. Next, spray application solution on the film to help a squeegee glide across the surface. Starting from the center, gently work out bubbles and wrinkles toward the edges of the window.
Once the bubbles have been removed, trim the excess film around the pane. Leave a 1/16” gap between the edge of the film and the window to allow the glass to expand naturally. Our kit came with an edging tool designed for this purpose.
Now carefully cut around the contact paper pieces. When the pattern is cut, gently pull back on both the contact paper and the window film to remove it from the pane. Leave the film to cure, which may take up to 10 days.
