It’s easy to make charming light displays in any room by simply combining glass containers and inexpensive white lights. This project’s “wow” factor comes from massing numerous vessels and lights.
Captivating Containers. You don’t have to spend a lot of money on containers to achieve knockout results. Use a variety of inexpensive containers to create an interesting display. We’ll show you how to drill the holes in the containers that make this project possible.
Drilling through glass isn’t much harder than drilling through wood if you use the right procedures and tools. First, lay the glass container in a tub of water that’s deep enough to totally submerge it. The water will act as a lubricant and keep the drill bit cool.
To cut the holes for this project, you’ll need a 1”-diameter diamond drill bit, also known as a diamond hole saw. Be sure to use a cordless drill for safety. Use the diamond drill bit to start drilling at an angle to “seat” the bit. It helps to steady the bit with your fingers to keep it from sliding.
Gradually straighten the drill and finish cutting through the glass. When the bit is about to break through the glass, reduce the pressure on the drill to prevent chips.
The holes allow the power cords to pass through each container, so you won’t have a tangled mess of cords. After filling the containers with lights, you’re ready to enjoy your display.
