Entryway areas often become cluttered, which doesn’t give the best first impression. This sturdy bench project helps you solve that problem by providing open cubes at each end for storage.
Quick Assembly. The bench is a hybrid of ready-built cubes that you purchase and a seat that you make from ¾” MDF. We purchased our storage cubes from an online retailer. You’ll also need eight 3” panhead sheet metal screws with washers, wood glue, and paint.
To prepare the cubes, you’ll need to pre-drill holes for the screws that connect the top. Lay the cubes on their sides, and drill four holes completely through the top of each.
The top is made from two layers of the MDF for added strength. Cut the two panels to size (ours are 16” x 54”). Evenly coat one side of one piece with glue, and clamp or screw them together. Seal the edges with a mixture of water and wood glue, and then paint the top.
To mount the seat to the cubes, clamp the cubes and seat together. Then drive in the screws with the washers as shown here.
We distressed the edges of the bench to give it a timeworn charm. The bench is the perfect spot for getting ready to head outside, and the storage below helps contain clutter.
