Craftsman style is a design aesthetic based on the value of beautiful materials and high-quality craftsmanship. When you decorate a room with this style, you’re creating a space that lets each individual piece shine.
Make It Modern. You’ll notice that not every element in this living room features traditional Craftsman style, though. This just goes to show how easily Craftsman style can be updated to reflect contemporary design preferences. Continue through the slides for more ideas to help you get the look.
Craftsman style was originally appealing because of its clean lines and simplicity, and those traits are still valued today. This plant stand (1), for example, is simple yet elegant in its design. Many traditional Craftsman-style furnishings feature exposed joinery, which draws attention to their construction while also serving as points of interest.
Include Organic Materials. Craftsman style embraces natural materials. Traditional Craftsman homes often feature wide wood trim and stone fireplaces. Since this room didn’t have those features, we added tile (2) that has the appearance of stone.
Use your color palette to set the mood for the space. Craftsman-inspired rooms often feature earthy tones, such as the one found on this sofa (3). You can then layer in other dramatic (but still nature-inspired) colors to draw the eye around the room.
Give It Modern Appeal. To make your Craftsman-inspired space feel contemporary, bend one of the “rules” of traditional Craftsman style. One way to do this is to pick a color for the walls or decor that falls outside of the typical Craftsman palette. You could also mix in some modern furnishings (4) for an eclectic look.
