Don’t kick your worn-out aluminum door to the curb yet. With just a little work on your part, it can be used for many more years to come.
Fresh Start. The remedy for a lackluster door is as simple as giving it a fresh coat of paint. This job is best done with the door lying flat, so start by taking it off the hinges. Then remove the screen or glass from the door.
After removing the door, clean it thoroughly so that the paint will adhere properly. A door with rust, chalking paint, or a glossy surface will also require a light sanding. When the surface is clean and dry, you’re ready to move on to the next step.
Now you’re ready to give the door a coat of primer. We used a primer that’s specially formulated for use on metal. Once that’s done, spray on the color of your choice. It will probably take a few coats to completely cover the surface.
